Chocolate Shakes Without the Calories, Caffeine and Sugar
Got shake? Follow-up questions might include: got fat? got sugar? got calories? I did a recent search for the nutritional content of a chocolate shake available at a popular fast food chain. What I discovered was staggering. Here are some of the nutritional highlights:
690 total calories
36g of total fat (24g of which were saturated fat)
83 g of carbohydrates
62 g of sugar
Wow. Now that's an energy packed meal all by itself--perhaps dense enough in calories to feed a small whale. Then again, I probably shouldn't have been surprised at the nutrient value or lack thereof. Just think of what goes into a chocolate shake. Chocolate syrup or powder of some kind, ice cream, sugar and some other "natural and artificial ingredients."
What you get is an indulgence many of us are too guilty to indulge in. That's even if we just drank the shake and called it a meal. But how many people drink a fast food shake for lunch? The shake is usually the add on, not the main course. Aha. Enter now the hamburger, fries, and sides. Now you have a complete heart attack in a bag.
As an antidote to this nutritional nightmare, health food companies have come out with a full array of "tasty shakes" that provide more nutrients and fewer calories. Unfortunately, these shakes either aren't "tasty" or contain nutritional compromises that they shouldn't. For instance, some are full of sugar, saturated fat, and carbs.
So what's a person with a sweet tooth and a craving for chocolate supposed to do? My solution years ago was to go cold turkey then indulge occasionally. That was before I discovered a chocolate shake/ meal replacement/ protein drink that was:
Low fat (1 gram)
Low sugar (9 g all from natural sources)
Caffeine free
Gluten-free
Artificial sweetener free
Preservative and artificial coloring free
Only 140 calories
It also had the following:
Antioxidants/phytochemicals
Vitamins and minerals
Prebiotics
Whole food sources (70 of the most exotic ingredients in the world)
Fiber, protein and carbs in the right balance
AND, it tastes amazing...a chocoholic's, diabetic's, shakeoholic's dream. Not only is it not bad for you like the run of the mill chocolate shake, this shake has been found to be overwhelmingly good for you.
